Sarasota County has a lot to offer visitors and residents who use wheelchairs, with accessible options across beaches, parks, trails, and cultural attractions.
Beaches
Siesta Beach offers a Mobi-Mat over 400 feet long, made from recycled plastics, that begins at the pavilion area and is maintained and cleaned daily. Other beaches including Lido, Venice, Nokomis, and North Jetty have wheelchair-accessible facilities such as restrooms, concession stands, covered seating, and boardwalks.
Beach wheelchairs are available free of charge from lifeguard towers at Lido, Nokomis, North Jetty, Venice, and Manasota Beaches daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and at Siesta Beach from the beach concessionaire from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Parks & Trails
The Legacy Trail stretches more than 10 miles from Culverhouse Nature Park in Sarasota south to the Venice Train Depot along a paved former railroad line. Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey offers accessible campsites, picnic pavilions, and a barrier-free trail with a handicapped-equipped fishing pier. In North Port, wheelchair-accessible pathways wind through the 16-acre Garden of the Five Senses, featuring a waterfall, native plantings, and sensory displays.
Cultural Attractions
At the Ringling complex, paved pathways connect the Museum of Art, Circus Museum, and Ca’ d’Zan mansion, and wheelchair-accessible trams with ramps are available throughout the property. Selby Gardens is fully wheelchair accessible, with paved sidewalks throughout and ramps at all buildings, including an elevator in the Children’s Rainforest Garden—just ask for the key at the front desk.
